Can Tho University's main missions are training, conducting scientific research, and transferring technology to serve regional and national socio-economic development. In addition to its training responsibilities, CTU has actively taken part in scientific research projects, applying the advances in scientific and technological knowledge to solving problems related to science, technology, economics, culture, and society in the region. From achievements in its scientific research and international cooperation projects, the university has developed a variety of products and technological production processes that benefit people’s lives and promote export, thus helping the University gain prestige in national and international markets.

The Institute of Food and Biotechnology (IFB) was established on October 10th, 2022 on the basis of a combination of the Institute of Biotechnology Research and Development and Department of Food Technology, College of Agriculture, Can Tho University, Currently, the Institute of Food and Biotechnology includes 4 affiliated Departments. The Department of Molecular Biology ; Department of Microbiology Technology; Department of Food Technology and Post-Harvest Technology Department of Food Technology.

The Department of Molecular Biology, predecessor is Department of Molecular Biotechnology (Biotechnology Research and Development Institute). The name of the department has been changed to Molecular Biology when the new institute has been established - Institute of Food and Biotechnology. The department is responsible for managing the undergradutate program, Bachelor in Biotechnology - Advanced Program, higher education program in Biotechnology (Master and Doctor levels). There are 13 lecturers (5 Associate Professors and 8 PhD.), 2 technician and 10 researchers. The laboratories of the department include: Molecular Biology Lab.; Gene Technology in Plant Lab.; Applied Biochemistry Lab.; Stem Cell Lab.; Bio Safety Level 3 (BSL3) Lab.

The international workshop "Molecular Biology and Applications 2024" is a meaningful academic activity, gathering many prestigious domestic and foreign scientists to participate. The Department of Molecular Biology of the Institute of Food & Biotechnology - Can Tho University is the organizer. The workshop will be a scientific forum where Vietnamese and international scientists; lecturers, graduate students, trainees and students from universities, research institutes, companies and businesses operating in the field of molecular and applied biology have the opportunity to collaborate and share new achievements of molecular biology in recent years in fields such as molecular biology in medicine, agriculture - aquaculture, food and environment.
